MAFFS Activates

Firefighters assemble before performing a controlled burn to starve the Thomas Fire of fuel, Dec. 10, 2017. Fire crews on the ground dig firebreaks and then call in aircraft, such as the C-130Js of the 146th Airlift Wing at Channel Islands Air National Guard Base in Port Hueneme, California, to drop fire suppression chemicals across the path of wildfires. If winds are calm enough, the firefighters will then burn away foliage in the fire's path to starve it of fuel and stop its advance. (U.S. Air Force photo by J.M. Eddins Jr.)
